They're soft! They blow in the wind! They come in white, pink, purple, and yellow. Most importantly, they are easy to grow. Sweet Alyssum is a wave of beauty that will bring a gorgeous smile to your Little Gardener's face.

Want to try growing this flower? It's an easy activity for families!

I have successfully grown Sweet Alyssum with my children for multiple years.

The steps are simple:

  1. Select a large pot. Here's a link to one similar to our pot (affiliate).

  2. Fill the pot with good soil. This should be a soil blend specifically made for raised beds or flower pots.

  3. Sprinkle a packet of seeds on top. Water them regularly. And if you forget, chances are they will still grow! (I might know this from personal experience...oops!)

  4. Watch these flowers grow and add beauty to your garden for the rest of the summer.

Tips for the Garden Grown Up:

Plant these seeds according to the zone in which you live. The back of the seed packet provides this guidance. Here are some seed packets that would work well for this project (affiliate).

Encourage your child to help with tasks. Ideas are:

  • Use a small bucket to scoop soil into the flower pot. Once the child has stronger motor skills, increase the challenge by using a gardening shovel to scoop the soil. Here's a link to the bucket we used (affiliate).

  • Have your child sprinkle the seeds into the soil.

  • Help your child hold the hose to water the flower seeds.

  • Allow your child to assist with taking pictures of the progress as the plants grow.

Other helpful materials for this project:

Ask your Little Gardener:

  • What do you notice about these seeds?

  • How would you describe the soil? Model using descriptive terms for texture, scent, and color.

  • How do you think these flowers will help our garden? (Ideas- attract pollinators, add beauty)
